IRMT Open Class
Sharing a moment of musical discovery during the IRMT open class.
I had the pleasure of giving an open class to my student Amelia Boyes at the recent IRMT event. It was a joy to share insights and guidance, and to see Amelia respond with curiosity, focus, and enthusiasm.
During the session, we began with warm-ups and scales, exploring different rhythms, arm weight, and wrist action to develop tone and control. These foundational exercises set the stage for a focused and expressive lesson.
Next, we worked on Ninette’s Musette by George Nevada (ABRSM Grade 4). The focus was on pedaling techniques, shaping the melody, and expressive phrasing. For the left-hand bass line, I used the image of “scooping an ice cream” to help Amelia feel the motion and harmony. For the right-hand melody, we explored finger weight, phrasing, and leaps. I used a small strawberry toy to show how pressing the keys with the right amount of weight can change the tone and expression.
We also discussed the relationship between the melody and accompaniment, imagining a singer with a microphone, supported by the bass line as the accompanying band. These creative word pictures help students understand musical expression in a memorable, hands-on way.
It was wonderful to see Amelia apply these ideas immediately, improving her tone, phrasing, and expression in real time. Open-class settings like this show the value of detailed guidance, creative teaching techniques, and the joy of learning together.
Than you to IRMT for the opportunity to inspire young musicians and share the love of music in such a supportive and educational environment.
